As the northmost of China's 33 provinces, Heilongjiang, literally "Black Dragon River", is known for its inhospitable, subarctic climate. Although with a territory as large as that of two United Kingdoms, Heilongjiang has a population of less than 38 million people and houses many different nationalities. The province, with its borders on Russian Siberia, has long been one of China's main gateways to Russia and Europe.

The city first came into being with the settlement, in 1097, of the Nazhen nationality. The place then was a natural, and cold, fishing area, situated right on the Songhua River.  Wudalianchi
For centuries this little village, high up in the inhospitable northeast of the province, remained cut off from external intrusion, housing only a few hunter-fishermen. The area was not the safest, not only rugged and populated with ferocious animals like the now almost extinct Siberian Tiger, but also one of the only volcanic regions of China, this area's last eruption occurring in the early eighteenth century. ......
