Hainan Island, China's newest province, lies on the same latitude as Hawaii, with a great climate and charming pace of life. This is a rich and prosperous province and the area now enjoys fame as one of China's most popular destinations.
Once known as the "Pit of the earth" and the "Gate of Hell" due to its status as a home for exiled government officials, Hainan has transformed its reputation, with the shift from being an independent region in 1989, to become a Special Economic Zone and now a world famous tropical resort. |

Haikou| Haikou perches neatly at the top of Hainan, facing Guangdong province across the Qiongzhou channel and at the mouth of the Nandu River. This is the political, commercial and transportation center of the province and serves as a convenient stopping point en route to the beaches in the south of the island. Perhaps the most curious aspect of the city however, is the feeling that despite the five million inhabitants here, this place lacks a truly "local" population. Everyone here seems to be visiting; be they tourists, business travelers or country bumpkins from out of town, it is hard to grasp just exactly who this city belongs to, especially considering the sheer speed that things are changing here. ...... |

| Sanya| Sanya town is situated on a small peninsula, connected to the mainland by two bridges. The town itself is a noisy and atmospheric place. This is an active naval base and men in uniform, "ladies of the night" and fishermen all mingle together around the docks and wharf area. This is a great place to soak up some atmosphere and the night market here is especially lively with seafood thrown on the streets, stores selling all types of weird and wonderful wares (including smuggled goods from Vietnam) and huge tea warehouses, all adding to the chaotic feeling about this place. ...... |
